Sunset Wedding Photos at a Florida Ranch: A Golden Hour Guide
Ask any wedding photographer what makes a Florida outdoor ceremony unforgettable and you'll hear the same two words: golden hour. That stretch of soft, warm light before sunset flatters every skin tone, melts harsh shadows, and turns open pasture into a glowing backdrop. Here's how to plan your ceremony — and your photo timeline — around it.
Why golden hour matters more in Florida
Florida's midday sun is bright and high — beautiful for the beach, brutal for portraits. Squinting eyes, hot shadows, and washed-out skies are hard for even a great photographer to fix. In the last 60–90 minutes before sunset, the light drops low and warm, and everything changes: pastures glow amber, oak canopies turn to soft silhouettes, and you get that painterly light couples pin on their mood boards.
Timing your ceremony: the 60–90 minute rule
Our outdoor ceremony site at Destiny Ranch faces west into the sunset beneath the oaks, so the timing formula is simple:
- Start your ceremony 60–90 minutes before sunset. You'll exchange vows in soft light and walk back up the aisle just as golden hour begins.
- Reserve 20–30 minutes for couple portraits. Right after the ceremony, slip away with your photographer while guests head to cocktail hour.
- Let the horses join. Our resident horses graze the pastures at dusk — some of the most-loved photos ever taken here include them.
Florida sunset times by season
Sunset shifts almost two and a half hours across the year in Bushnell:
- December–January: about 5:30–5:45 pm — plan a 4:00–4:30 pm ceremony
- February–March & October–November: about 6:15–7:00 pm — ceremony around 5:00–5:45 pm
- April–May & September: about 7:30–8:00 pm — ceremony around 6:15–6:45 pm
(We close June through August — Florida summer is no friend to formal wear.) Your photographer can fine-tune the schedule once you have a date; we're happy to connect them with the venue in advance.
The best photo spots on the ranch
- The west pasture at golden hour — wide open light, grazing horses, oak silhouettes.
- The ceremony arbor — sunset framed directly behind you during the vows.
- The Legacy Barn at dusk — string lights and warm wood glow as the sky goes blue; a perfect first-dance shot through the barn doors.
- The entrance gate drive — a classic send-off shot lined with oaks.
